If you’ve scoured countless interior design magazines and online Pinterest boards without being able to make up your mind, we can help. Here are 7 of the best design trends for this year, courtesy of trend-setters Elle Décor and other sources, to give you some much-needed inspiration…
1. Hidden storage
There’s clever storage, and then there’s concealed storage. The latter simply appears as a beautiful piece of panelling, when it’s actually a hidden cupboard. You know it’s there, but a casual onlooker won’t. Hidden storage creates sleek, smooth lines and a gorgeously minimalist look for your kitchen.
2. Open shelving
In direct opposition to the trend for concealed storage is open shelving, which many people prefer. If you’re tired of minimalism, want to make a statement and open up the space (and let more light through), this is the option to choose.
3. Vintage furniture and accents
You may not think it’s possible to incorporate vintage elements in a new kitchen, but a growing trend shows that it really is – and you can do it in real style. The easiest way is through vintage breakfast bar stools and retro-inspired light fittings, as well as art work, soft furnishings and decorative touches such as vases, storage canisters and fruit bowls.
This is rather an extreme trend, and you’ll need a space which gets a lot of natural light, but matte black has been growing in popularity. The key to creating a sophisticated space rather than a gloomy one is good lighting and accents of natural materials (like real wood worktops), subtle colour and metallic fixtures.
5. Wood and white
White kitchens have been popular forever, as people like their clean, sparkling look. However, white kitchens can look a little clinical if you aren’t careful. The perfect way to avoid this and warm up the space is with one of the other main kitchen design trends for 2019 – wood and white. Choose just two tones, pristine white and beautiful, great quality wood in worktops, cabinet fronts and/or floors. You’ll just need to be careful to get the balance right.
6. Colourful and painted cabinets
Painted cabinets were a big kitchen trend in 2018, but they’re going even brighter in 2019. Get the balance right (keeping everything else neutral) and these bold cupboards and drawer fronts will really make a statement. Goodbye, boring kitchens!
7. Raw materials
If you have the opportunity and you like the look, embrace the growing trend for raw materials in kitchens. The easiest to do is a raw brick wall (or brick effect tiling) with a modern kitchen, or a real stone floor, or even a rough, natural material for your worktop.
