B&Q Kitchens, which commissioned the survey through OnePoll.com, asked more than 2,000 people what they would put in their dream kitchen if money was no object. Some of the top items on the wish list regularly come up in surveys of this kind, such as freestanding kitchen islands – which have been hugely popular for many years now.
Others were more surprising, with 25% of people saying they’d like a specialist wine fridge and 30% wanting a ‘slide and hide’ oven (possibly due to their use in popular TV shows such as The Great British Bake Off).
Other main findings from the survey included:
- 49% of people just want more natural light in their kitchens
- Around a third want heated flooring in the kitchen
- 18% love the idea of a pop-up extractor fan
- Double sinks are an essential in the dream kitchen for 40% of people.
Also on the dream kitchen wish list were smart appliances like dishwashers and washing machines, pull-out cabinets, under-cabinet lighting and breakfast bars. People also loved the idea of patio doors opening onto the back garden, as well as a countryside view from the ‘washing up window’.
What about the look of the kitchen?
The researchers also asked about the look and style of the kitchen, as well as what features and appliances people would include in their ideal kitchen. It emerged that modern, minimalist kitchens were more popular than country-style or traditional looks, with around twice as many people preferring the former. White walls and tiled floors were voted a must, and people wanted their kitchens to be the same size as the dining room.
As for where people are getting style inspiration, there’s no surprise there – as 25% of people get ideas from home improvement TV shows while 10% steal ideas from the internet.
UK kitchens in need of an update
As well as asking what people would ideally love in the kitchen of their dreams, the poll also looked at how satisfied British homeowners are with their current kitchens. The results were disheartening, as around 75% said they don’t currently have their dream kitchen and a further 28% said that using their current ‘drab’ kitchens makes them feel sad.
It’s clear that the nation’s kitchens are badly in need of an upgrade, with just over a quarter of survey respondents saying it’s been more than 10 years since their kitchen has had any TLC or significant update.
