When creating your new kitchen from scratch, it’s easy to get carried away with the look and the aesthetics of the room. However, you need to force yourself to think about practical things too, such as how easy your new kitchen will be to clean. To stop your dream kitchen turning into a cleaning nightmare, follow these tips: |
Your minimalist design might look amazing, but where are you going to put all of your pots and pans, not to mention your massive collection of herbs and spices? Storage is everything when it comes to keeping a kitchen clean and tidy, so put it at the top of your list.
2. Get everything off the work surface
The less you have sitting on your work surface, the easier it will be to clean. This is because you won’t have to constantly move things out the way, or have to clean round them. Go for clever solutions like magnetic wall-mounted knife racks, hooks and low shelves to de-clutter your work surfaces and make cleaning them a doddle.
3. Don’t overdo it with work surfaces
The more space you have, the more of it you will have to clean when it gets messy. Only add in as much worktop space as you actually need, or it’ll be very tempting to spread out and mess it all up.
4. Consider glass splash backs instead of wall tiles
Tiles can be fiddly to clean between, so it might be better to go for an ‘all in one’ piece like a coloured glass splashback designed to cover the same space as tiles. You can clean it all in one sweep – very satisfying!
5. Choose hard-wearing materials
As beautiful as it might look, a work surface that traps crumbs in its textured surface or that marks and stains easily is not a practical choice. You’ll soon forget about how lovely it looks when you’re struggling to clean it every day! Go for hard-wearing materials like granite, stainless steel, solid wood – depending on your budget, of course.
6. Find a place for everything, including bins!
When designing your kitchen, pay attention to where everything from tea towels to recycling bins will go. Walk around your existing kitchen to make a list of everything you’ll need to find a home for – if it doesn’t have a home, it is bound to get left out and cause a mess.
7. Avoid dark surfaces
You might think that dark surfaces (i.e. wall and floor tiles, worktops) are a good idea because they will hide the dirt. Unfortunately, the opposite is often the case. Dark colours can show up streaks, smears and dirt far more than a mid-colour like grey or medium brown, and they can be a nightmare to clean.
