Here are some of the easiest-to-make kitchen design mistakes, so make sure you spot and rectify these before your project gets any further!
Wall units that finish just before the ceiling
If you’re going to take full advantage of a high ceiling in your kitchen, make sure you use all of it and go right up to the ceiling. Alternatively, finish a sensible distance below it. Wall units that finish just a few inches below the ceiling could be a big mistake. They can make the room look unfinished or carelessly planned, and also provide a place for grease, dirt and dust to gather where it’s hard to clean. Experts recommend that when units finish within a foot of the ceiling, the cabinetry should meet the ceiling.
Corner sinks
This might be a nice idea on paper, but corner sinks are a practical nightmare. They make life virtually impossible for kitchen fitters and eat up valuable counter and storage space in the corner. In short, corner sinks are a dysfunctional design and should be avoided.
A lack of symmetry around windows
You need to be careful when placing units around windows. If units are different distances from the window on either side, it spoils the symmetry and can look odd.
Doors that jar with each other
The doors near each other in your kitchen should be able to open at the same time as each other without jarring. If not, you’ll end up in a complicated process of opening and shutting doors when in the middle of preparing a meal – and some doors could even sustain damage due to knocks and collisions.
No bin!
Waste and recycling bins are an absolutely crucial element of any kitchen, but it’s amazing how often they are forgotten. This can lead to an ugly, ill-fitting bin being plonked in a corner, or a position where it’s in the way. Building in space for rubbish and recycling bins is essential at an early stage, especially if you want to hide them away.
A lighting black spot
Lighting can make or break a kitchen, but it can be tricky to get right. Make sure there are no ‘black spots’ in your kitchen where a light does not reach, as this can create uneven lighting a rather neglected feeling in that part of the room. Go for lighting that is flexible and adjustable, and always put too much in – you don’t have to turn all the lights on at once, but it gives you options.
